When going through difficult times, many people feel alone and isolated, believing that no-one understands what they are dealing with. Group therapy is a way to learn new skills, experience yourself in a unique way, and share is an environment where the other group members are dealing with the same or similar issues. Modalities for group therapy include all of those methods for individual therapy, with the addition of having the ability to interact with one another benefiting from the giving and receiving of peer as well as therapist feedback.
The Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Group is based on the method of therapy developed by Marsha Linehan, PhD over 30 years ago. DBT is a Cognitive Behavioral approach to managing difficult and intense emotions as well as self injurious behaviors. The therapeutic method teaches core coping skills for emotions and ways of interacting more effectively in interpersonal relationships. It has been widely researched as extremely effective in the treatment of Anxiety and Mood disorders, Personality Disorders, Post traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and relationship issues.
The focus is on teaching and applying the core skills of Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation and Mindfulness as well as the processing of shared issues with group members. Group materials will be distributed and homework on utilizing skills will be assigned each week.
The weekly DBT group is composed of no more than 10 members per session, with a required minimum of 4 members, and runs for 8 consecutive weeks. There is both a Teen Group and an Adult Group. Group members are either all teens or all adults.
Weekly sessions last for 90 minutes. In addition, an initial individual screening intake session is required prior to the session starting to register for the next group series. Intake assessments are designed to assess appropriateness and fit for the group as well as to determine individual member needs.
Many insurance companies will cover some or all of the cost. There is also a cash pay option.
